Verdict: One of the best-sounding inline-sixes ever made, and only a smart buy with paperwork. Budget $3k–$8k for catch-up maintenance unless records show the big three (rod bearings, VANOS, subframe) are done.

Buy-risk rundown
| Issue | Symptom | How to check | Typical cost (as of Nov 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rod bearings (S54 tight clearances) | Often none until a knock; by then the crank is often damaged | Ask for records; budget for the job on cars over 70k mi without documented service | ~$1,500–$2,500 shop [2]; ~$2,000 per Grassroots Motorsports, OEM kit ~$754 [1] |
| VANOS (oil-pump drive tabs, seals, solenoid, hub bolts) | CEL P0011–P0015/P1525/P1531, misfires, flat spots, cold-start rattle | Scan for codes; listen on a cold start | Seals ~$60–150 DIY; shop $500–$900 [2]; full overhaul ~$2,500–$2,800 [3][4] |
| Rear subframe/floor cracking | Thud on hard shifts or launches, vague rear end | Inspect trunk floor and mounts; small cracks may only show with subframe dropped | $1,000–$1,500 kit + labor [1]; $2,000–$5,000 specialist [2]; $5k+ if badly torn [3] |
| SMG II pump | SMG fault codes, slow or no shifts | Test drive and scan the SMG system | Motor kit ~$390 [1] |
| Cooling system | Leaks, temperature creep | Check for coolant leaks and the expansion tank | OEM overhaul kit ~$1,430 [1]; radiator $500–$1,000 [5] |

Notes
- Valve adjustment (~every 30k mi): ~$500–$2,000 at a shop [3]. Plan ~$5k–$9k if none of the big three are done.
- Bearing parts differ for cars built before vs. after 2/2003 (separate kits exist) [1].
- BMW Service Action SI B11 04 04 (Aug 2004) replaced the connecting-rod bearings and reflashed the DME on E46 M3 coupes/convertibles built 02/12/2001–05/22/2003. A BMW dealer can check the VIN for completion [6]. Many of these cars have since needed bearings again; treat it as history, not a fix.
